Resume for Freshers: Format, Sections and a Complete Example
How to write your first resume as a fresher or recent graduate — the right section order, what to put in projects and internships, and a complete one-page example you can adapt.
Quick answer
A fresher résumé should show relevant education, projects, internships and skills, even without full-time work experience. Use concrete examples of what you built or contributed, keep the layout easy to read, and tailor the content to the job. Do not invent experience or metrics.
A first resume is hard because the usual advice assumes years of work history. As a fresher, recruiters judge you on potential and evidence: what you built, what you learned and how clearly you present it. Here’s how to make one page do that.
The right section order for freshers
- Name and contact details — phone, professional email, city, LinkedIn, GitHub or portfolio
- Headline — the role you’re applying for, e.g. “Frontend Developer” or “Graduate Analyst”
- Summary — two sentences
- Education — degree, college, years, and your grade if it helps
- Projects — your strongest evidence
- Internships / Experience — including part-time work and freelancing
- Skills — grouped
- Certifications, achievements, activities
Education and projects come before experience because they are your strongest material. Once you have a year or two of work, move Experience up.
Projects: your most important section
Pick 2–4 projects that match the job. For each, include:
- Name and one-line description — what it is and who it’s for
- Tech stack or tools
- A link — live site, GitHub or demo
- 2–3 bullets on what you did and what it achieved
Weak: “Made an e-commerce website using MERN stack.” Strong: “Built a MERN e-commerce site with cart, payments (Razorpay test mode) and an admin dashboard; deployed on Vercel with 95+ Lighthouse performance.”
College projects, hackathons, open-source contributions and freelance work for local businesses all count.
Internships and part-time work
Treat internships like jobs: title, company, dates, and results. Non-technical work counts too — retail, tutoring, operations or accounts work shows responsibility and reliability. Describe it with numbers: “Handled billing and cash reconciliation for a store with ~300 daily transactions.”
Skills: group them, don’t rate them
Languages: JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, SQL
Frontend: React, Next.js, Tailwind CSS
Backend: Node.js, Express, PostgreSQL
Tools: Git, GitHub Actions, Figma, Postman
Skip progress bars and star ratings — they don’t parse and recruiters ignore them. Only list skills you could answer interview questions about.

Common fresher mistakes
- A long objective about what you want. Replace it with a two-sentence summary of what you offer.
- Personal details like date of birth, father’s name or marital status. They’re not needed for most private-sector jobs and take space.
- A photo — unless the employer asks for one.
- Listing every course you took. Pick the ones relevant to the role.
- Two pages. One page is right for freshers.
