200+ Resume Action Verbs, Grouped by What You Actually Did

Replace "responsible for" with strong resume action verbs. 200+ verbs grouped by leadership, building, improving, analysis, communication and more — with before-and-after examples.

Quick answer

Start each résumé bullet with a specific verb that describes your contribution, such as built, analysed, improved or led. Follow it with the work and an outcome. Choose wording that matches what you actually did; a stronger-sounding verb cannot replace evidence.

“Responsible for”, “worked on” and “helped with” describe a job description, not what you achieved. Starting each bullet with a precise verb forces you to say what you did — and recruiters scanning in seconds see the action first.

Pick the verb that matches the real work. Don’t reach for “spearheaded” if you joined halfway through.

How to use a verb list

  1. Write the bullet plainly first: “I made the onboarding emails better.”
  2. Ask what you actually did: rewrote them? tested variants? automated them?
  3. Pick the verb that says that: “Rewrote”, “A/B-tested”, “Automated”.
  4. Add the result: “…lifting week-one activation from 31% to 38%.”

A quick test for every bullet

Read the bullet without the verb. If it still makes sense, the verb is doing no work. Then check: does the bullet say what changed? If not, add the result — our guide to quantifying achievements shows how.
